Dangerous product: Vaping linked to hundreds of cases of illness

For decades, there has been information available regarding the potential harm that smoking cigarettes can cause. Perhaps because of this, many have turned to an alternative in the form of e-cigarettes in recent years, perhaps believing that it holds less risks to their health. Unfortunately, reports regarding serious illnesses occurring in North Carolina and other areas of the country have prompted the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention to recommend cessation of use of such devices. Many across the country are suffering as a result of what appears to be a dangerous product.

According to the CDC, there have been approximately 450 cases of lung illnesses related to vaping. Unfortunately, five people have died. Reports indicate that all of these victims had vaped in the days or weeks preceding their illness; many of the patients used tetrahydrocannabinol (THC). These cases have been reported in over 30 states, including North Carolina, and a territory.

Patients report shortness of breath, difficulty breathing and chest pain. Additional symptoms could include fever, diarrhea, vomiting and fatigue. While the exact cause of the illnesses is unclear, the CDC believes that chemical exposure is the culprit. Some reports link the illness to exposure to Vitamin E acetate.

There have been diagnosed cases of acute exogenous lipoid pneumonia in North Carolina, believed to be related to vaping. Unfortunately, illnesses such as this can be life-changing, with many victims requiring not just hospitalization but also admittance to the intensive care unit. Hospitalization can quickly result in overwhelming medical bills, and victims could potentially require ongoing treatment. In cases of illnesses involving a dangerous product, many patients may choose to file a personal injury lawsuit against those believed to be responsible, such as the manufacturer, if negligence played a party in their injury. If successful, they could ensure their medical bills and other financial obligations are met in addition to ensuring that others do not suffer similarly.
