How fast does your BAC go down once you stop drinking?

On Behalf of | Nov 24, 2025 | CRIMINAL LAW - Drunk Driving

While you are drinking, your blood alcohol concentration is consistently going up. Technically, it is still going up for a short amount of time after you stop drinking, as your final drink is absorbed into the bloodstream.

But after that, how quickly is it going to drop again? One reason that people get in trouble with DUI charges is that they will wait for their BAC to decline and then get in the car, thinking that they have waited long enough. But they may still have an elevated BAC. To avoid this type of issue, how long would you have to wait?

BAC declines at 0.015% per hour

The most important thing to know about your BAC is that it declines very slowly. It is only going to drop at about 0.015% per hour for most people. This means that it will likely take hours to see a substantial decline or reduction in your BAC. Some people can even find themselves facing impaired driving charges the next day, depending on how high their BAC was the day before.

Can you speed this up?

People are often looking for ways to speed up their BAC decline, such as drinking coffee. But nothing really changes how fast those numbers are going to fall. Coffee can wake you up and make you feel alert, but it does not sober you up. You simply have to wait.
